Were you athletic in your youth?
Yes and no….. I wasn’t able to participate in sports since they weren’t offered through the school district til I was a junior then it was the swim team/springboard diving and teaching swimming to kindergartners. As a senior I participated in Girls Track n Field ..mile relay and 440
What were some of your athletic accomplishments?
The above…. I lettered in track.
When did you start working out and what inspired you to do so?
When I was in school and had started participating in sports, I had developed a serious appetite to support my energy levels so when I graduated in 1975 and was gainfully employed fulltime within two month doing a desk job, I continued to eat the way I did when I was in school not to mention the quality of foods I chose were worse and the most physical activity was doing at that time, was to ride my ten-speed bike to get around, otherwise it was public transportation. It took a good year for my metabolism to slow and in time I started gaining weight… By the time I turned 19 I was wearing size 12/14 in women’s pants and my nickname became thunder thighs. On a date night, my boyfriend was cooking me dinner…and I was relaxing in one of his papasan chairs that kind of titled me back and being short, my feet were no where near the floor… I got stuck, couldn’t get out of it when he was calling me to join him. He had to rescue me….that was my defining moment of not only needing to but “wanting” to do something about When I was in school and had started participating in sports, I had developed a serious appetite to support my energy levels so when I graduated in 1975 and was gainfully employed fulltime within two month doing a desk job, I continued to eat the way I did when I was in school not to mention the quality of foods I chose were worse and the most physical activity was doing at that time, was to ride my ten-speed bike to get around, otherwise it was public transportation. I cleaned house of all canned and processed foods, turning to fresh fruits, vegetables, eggs, dairy, tuna, etc..
This is when I technically started working out in 1978 …… started doing calisthenics on my living room floor, and incorporated jogging at first 6 blocks, one mile became two then three, four, up to five miles, then adding stairs or hills, five times a week. This took me up to a year on my own, losing 15 pounds. When I plateaued, is when I joined my first gym Jan 1979 that’s where the love of weights came. This was also when co-ed gyms hadn’t really taken hold .. yet, so Harold Caulkin’s In-Trim Health Studio in West Seattle was Men/Women on alternate days so I only had 3 days a week. Pretty basic, no bells and whistles. Then in the late 80’s/early 90’s, as I moved into a larger club, I transitioned or “crossed over” as they say, and became an aerobics instructor, got certified, taught classes 2 – 3x a week. I still lifted, and worked part-time as an Aerobics Coordinator/Instructor and started personal training.
What gets you pumped up the most right before a workout?
If I really really have to pump myself up, must be because I’m tired. Just the desire to do it and an understanding of “having” to do it.….I’m a very structured, routine, brick & mortar type of person so the regiment and discipline of this fits me.
How do you balance career/school/family and fitness? My hobby, my career is fitness…..balancing family, that’s easy, their grown ass adults, on their own.
Do you have a favorite quote that inspires you?
I have many for many different situations and aspects of life but the one that sticks out and can apply to anything: The ultimate measure of a man or woman, is not where he or she stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he or she stands at times of challenge and controversy. – Martin Luther King Jr.
Have you ever competed and if so, how long have you been competing?
Like I said, literally started when IT all started for the women in 1979
What competitions did you compete in and how did you do?…………….
Since 1979? Too many to list. … Obviously not pro yet…
How do you relax when you’re not working out? …………..
Watch TV…to be entertained
What do you always take with you to the gym (list 1–3 items)? ………..
My water jug, my phone/media player, clipboard
What is your favorite physical feature and why?
My back side…so I’ve been told.
Who has supported you the most throughout your fitness journey?
Me, myself, and I.
What are your big plans for the future?
To renovate the thinking that goes into the pages of top Health and Fitness magazines, where women are their demographics, but no one over 40 is represented. They’re missing a whole 50+ market.
On that last set that is so tough that you just want to quit, what is the image or voice that drives you to push yourself one step further?
No image but definitely a voice…that wants to hear DONE!
City
Boise
Age
61
Height
5' Feet
Weight
114 Lbs
Who is your role model? Why?
I’m going to say me…. Honestly, I don’t now, nor do I remember ever having one…..outside of me. My grandmother on my mother’s side had some pearls of wisdom that to this day I remember and adopted.
Are you a more of a cardio woman or a weights gal? Why?
I’m going to say a weights gal…at first, given my introduction into this lifestyle that’s all we knew…go up the mountain with Arnold and do squats…come back down and eat ☺ I did throw in a five mile run 4-5x a week….but when you’re out in the cow pastures of Billings MT at 20 degrees, running doesn’t seem so important then.
What is your favorite cheat food? How often do you indulge?
I allow myself ONE cheat MEAL a week….whatever I’m wanting at the moment and it could range from a dinner at Barbacoa’s Mediterranean Bar n Grill….Hot rock fillet and dessert☺… to a peanut buster parfait
What is your favorite non-cheat food?
A rice cake with PB n Jelly n Sea salt
What is your favorite training move? Why?
That’s a tuffy…walking lunges feel like they take so much outta me, basically anything to do with legs is a love/hate relationship
What is your workout plan like?
Pretty intense….right now alternating a 3 day split of movements for each muscle group with focus on strength or hypertrophy (sets/#reps w/fixed weight (hypertrophy/volume)… or increase weights ea set (strength)
What time of day do you workout and why?
I fluctuate like crazy….I used have a time of day dictated by the job I had at the time….now I bend and flex depending on the days/times I have my clients to work with….it gets crazy sometimes when there’s cancel/reschedules (my fault for allowing it).
What celebrity are you told you most look like (if applicable)?
I don’t know about now but at one time I was told Demi Moore
What do you love most about your job? ………..
By knowing what I know now I feel I have the ability to help people especially those that are of the same era I am but didn’t have the advantage of getting in on the ground floor like I did, evolve with the industry like I did, as the research, studies, and information flowed on down the pipeline. By the time the information became available and we had access to it, we were a good 20 years settled into our routines, already having experienced health issues, surgeries, and development of compensations.
Where do you work out (home, gym, studio, community center, etc.)?
My own little fitness studio and one of the larger gyms in Boise. Sometimes it gets too quiet at my place so I like to go where the big boys play…where I can draw from the energy.
Do you prefer training alone or with a buddy and why?
It’s been a lonely road. I’ve had “training” buddies in the past off n on, my husband (now ex of 20 yrs) ..they say “familiarity breeds contempt”… a gal here and there, were never reliable workout partners and exhausted me to having to run after them (accountability).. so I motivated myself.
What's your favorite type of cardio?
Partial to the treadmill….I like to run doing HIIT or dance on it ☺
What's your best fitness tip (this could be related to training, nutrition, personal attitude, fitness gear, etc.)?
Don’t beat yourself up for “falling off the wagon” whether its’ your workouts or your nutrition program…If you can identify the what…then identify the why, once you understand that then you can correct it to get back on track and don’t be afraid or embarrassed to ask for help
What is your favorite book and why?...............
Thirteen Reasons Gilbert J. Farley….. Erotic
What is the last movie you saw?............
Alita Battle Angel………………not my choice lol
What music/CD do you listen to when you work out? Why?
Jock Jams good mix of old school pop, hip hop, techno, etc.
What piece of advice would you give to a newbie in the gym?
Get a trainer
